Dear friends:
I enter my second session as Fairfield and Westport's state representative eager to take on new challenges and issues on behalf of our towns. With presidential primaries at the forefront of news coverage nationwide, I've also begun to think about my own re-election campaign and the opportunity to get out once again to talk with you about your priorities and concerns.
Two years ago many of you invested in my campaign. It was your support that provided the engine for my victory, allowing me to become the first Democrat elected to the 133rd legislative seat since 1912. I hope you will be inspired to support me as I prepare to run as an incombent in 2008.
I truly enjoyed every minute of my time in Hartford over the past year. Working closely with Connecticut General Assembly leaders and colleagues, I succeeded in bringing home more education dollars while fighting for state money for local public-safety, flood-mitigation and arts-development projects.
The Road to Victory in 2008
Although I will work just as hard to win as I did two years ago, the upcoming campaign and how I finance it will be different. In 2005, the legislature passed sweeping campaign finance reform legislation that created a system of public financing (See my January Fairfield Minuteman op-ed), and in 2008 Connecticut will be one of only three states in the country to fund election campaigns with taxpayer dollars.
The new system means I will no longer need to solicit big contributions from anyone, including my friends and family. And I can no longer accept donations from any PAC or special-interest group. All of these organizations have been stripped of their inside connections and influence. The hope is that as special-interest money dries up, legislators will be free to more directly serve their constituents.
I hope you will follow my campaign throughout the year, and as always, feel free to contact me directly at kim@kimfawcett.com or 203-258-8922.
Warmly,
